23 Sep 08 Men’s Oral Health

Rather than seeking preventative care, men put off visits to the dentist until major restorative cosmetic dentistry is required. The Penn Dental Association has issued a warning to men and women that preventative dental care leads to better overall health. To restate the obvious, when men let their dental health go down hill so does their over all health! Everyone should visit the dentist every six months. You life, not just your teeth, depends on it.

Men are more likely to have periodontal health problems. Possible early warnings include bleeding gums, sore gums, loose teeth and constant bad breath. To prevent these problems you should brush twice a day, floss and consume nutritious foods daily. “Studies have shown that systemic diseases, like diabetes, have a direct effect on the health of your gums and bone surrounding your teeth,” said Dr. Steven Grater, a PDA spokesperson. “Continued dental care will prevent these systemic diseases from allowing periodontal disease to destroy your oral health.”

Studies show poor dental health is linked to heart disease. Some heart treatments can lead to dry mouth and so your dentist needs to know what prescriptons you are taking. If left untreated, dry mouth can lead to tooth decay. Also, men are twice as likely to get oral cancer as women. Regular visits to Atlanta Dentist or Marietta Dentist are a necessity to stay on top of your health. A healthy smile is the wonderful byproduct.
